General  |  In Character

For the lazy ones among us, these rules can be summed up as follows; Don't be an ass, and if you wouldn't believe it, we definitely won't, so don't try it.  If you can't figure out what that means, read on.  If you can, read on anyways because there are a couple useful facts mixed in.

Actions

We ask that you differentiate between speech and actions; the preferred method is to write as you would if writing a book, speech contained in quotes. You can also mark your actions with asterisks or colons. Telepathic speech or thoughts should be placed in tildes ~~, OOC talk goes in double brackets. If you’re confused as to what are actions and what is speech, ask the person who’s post you’re confused about. Everyone has their own personal style.

OOC Chat

This is what the OOC room is for. Brief comments are okay, but keep the conversations in #rdiooc.

Combat

Combat here at RDI is turn based, meaning you cannot post a second time until the person you are fighting responds to your previous post. There is no time limit. If you wish to fight on a timed basis, fight somewhere else. If there are more than two people fighting together, keep the same order of posting, unless a different arrangement is agreed upon by all participants.

God Moding

One of the basics of FFRP is that you the player decide what happens to your character, nobody else. Though this rule is mostly thought of a combat rule, it applies out of combat as well. You cannot hit someone and say you do damage to them. You can say you swing your fist at someone with enough force to do damage, or if it hits, it will do damage. Then the receiving character could take the blow, take it partially, block or dodge it. The only case when you could call a hit would be when the other player has clearly consented to that action beforehand, most likely in a PM.

Taking Hits

Nobody is invincible. While God moding in its typical form is bad enough, more common among roleplayers is defensive Godmoding; never allowing your character to be hit. Yes, you decide what happens to your character, but that doesn't mean you can do everything you want. If you let your character get knocked unconscious and bound to a stake, there is no way you're going to get free unless someone helps you. If you allow the other character to do that to your character, don't come running to an op complaining about it. You let it happen, or put your character in a situation where their death was inevitable.

Similarly, people don't move in bullet time. The chances of your character noticing an arrow or dagger flying at them from behind are slim enough, never mind having the time to move at all.

Playing with Everybody Else

This is a much debated topic. Some people prefer to RP in their own little worlds, pretending that everybody else doesn't exist, and ignoring those people who try to join them. That's not allowed here. If someone walks into the room with a sword and tries to stab you, you will either a) get stabbed b) duck! If you don’t react when someone attacks you, they’ll hit you. If you didn’t see their initial post, say so, and then go back and write a response to the initial action.

Of course, if there's anyone else around to call the guard, your would be attacker will quickly find themselves arrested and jailed at best, and if they resist arrest the guards of Senesse are quite happy to dispose of murderers.

For example, if someone is raving mad, you would notice them as they go crashing over your table, or run into the wall beside the door. The world around you is an active place when you RP, try to take note of it.

The exception to this rule is the 'Clueless Newb.'  While occasionally players choose to roll with a completely random occurrence created by a person coming in RDI for the time (walking in and stabbing someone, for example.) Generally you'll see the action, and then the person will get dragged away into half a dozen PM windows giving them information about RDI.  The reason for this is simple; any character with half a brain would know that Senesse has a very active city guard, and thus wouldn't try to kill someone in a public place.  The player didn't know about this, thus thought it was 'okay,' creating a situation that should never have occured.

Staying in the Times

This room has a High Fantasy setting; there are no guns pistols, no cars, no jeans, no cigarettes, or anything of the like. Speech, for the benefit of us all, can be is written normally. 'Old English', with it's Thous and Thees and Forsooths, is discouraged unless it is pertinent to the story. If you are having difficulty figuring out what your character would have instead of a modern item, ask an operator. More detail on what exactly fits into RDI's unique setting can be found in the 'Senesse' and 'Getting Started' sections.

Resurrection, Reincarnation, and other Miraculous Acts

For anything stretching belief, powerful magical events, deities intervening in everyday life, and the like, contact an operator to talk about it, and have a good reason to back up your request. Wanting your character resurrected 'just because' is not going to cut it.  Time Travel fits into this category.
